After
the smoke settled from all the fire sales at this year’s trade deadline, the
best deal of the day (or worst depending on how you look at it) was when the
Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila sent catcher Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs.
If
you noticed the two last names were the same and questioned whether they were
related, you would be right. Alex Avila is the son of Al Avila. That has to be
the ballsiest move anyone have ever made at the trade deadline. You realize
your team is going downhill, you’re 10 games out of first place in your
division. You have to start selling off pieces. The first thing you think of is
to trade your son, someone you don’t need, for pieces that will be better in
the future. Complete savage move.
It
gets better too. Al Avila was asked about the trade. He said “Obviously you
think, well, he’s your son so you probably feel even worse. Not really. Nobody
likes to go through trades.”
Not
only did this guy trade his son, he told him it wasn’t hard doing it either.
This guy deserves an award.
Father
Avila signed son Avila to a “prove-it” type contract in the offseason. Son
Avila signed a one-year $2 million deal as a second chance to bounce back after
two horrendous seasons. This guy treats his son in the most savage way
possible. I guess that’s the way of the game though. You can’t make any money
and win any championships giving contracts out to guys just because you’re
related.
I wonder how awkward that is to have that conversation. Son Avila gets called into his father's office.
"Son you've been traded."
"For who? Mike Trout? Must be the only player worth more than your own son to you."
"I traded you for a couple prospects. Fit better in the future. You're not very good and frankly, you have no future in my eyes."
Can someone please get on the transcripts for this conversation?

I wonder what it will be like next family reunion…
